To get an income-driven repayment plan with MOHELA, you apply at studentaid.gov for RAP or IBR. After that, your bill is set by MOHELA. Since July 1, 2026, RAP has been open, with the monthly payment starting at $10.

  • July 1, 2026RAP became available
  • On RAP, it's 1% to 10% of AGI
  • On IBR, it's 10% or 15% of discretionary income
  • Switching plans is free

Put in an application for a MOHELA income-driven repayment plan

As the servicer, MOHELA handles billing for federal loans owned by the Department of Education. The site is mohela.studentaid.gov.

  1. On your studentaid.gov dashboard, look under My Aid for your servicer.

  2. Bring up the application for income-driven repayment.

  3. Choose RAP or IBR. First compare both with your own numbers.

  4. Give consent to share your tax data, then enter your family size and filing status.

  5. Send it in. Your new payment amount is set by MOHELA after it processes your plan change.

What you need to give MOHELA

  • The AGI on your latest tax return, or your consent to pull it.
  • The way you file your taxes.
  • How many dependents you claim.
  • A fresh update each year when it asks for one.

How to check what your new payment is

After you apply, log in to your MOHELA account. The new amount appears there, plus in a letter you receive. Earning $60,000, Kevin is working toward PSLF. Under RAP, he'd pay about $250. With IBR, for a loan borrowed in 2014 or later, it's about $300. Under RAP, the progress you make counts toward PSLF.

MOHELA student loan consolidation

If you receive a Direct Consolidation Loan July 1, 2026 or later, it can use only Tiered Standard or RAP. When a consolidation includes parent PLUS loans and happens July 1, 2026 or later, only Tiered Standard applies, and it is not PSLF eligible. So consider it carefully before consolidating.
